Rikke Hat

Do you remember? I wanted to offer my Cladonia Shawl, but the colors didn't appear to be right for my recipient. We finally found this pattern/yarn combo, and now it's finished, ready to be offered. I hope she will like the softness of the wool, and the gentle shape of this hat. Hope this humble hat will bring her a little comfort as well.

A sea of Garter Stitch...
Pattern: Rikke Hat by Sarah Young.

Yarn: Malbrigo Yarn, Silky Merino, Cape Cod Grey. 0.95 skein.

Needles: Addi Turbo Circular 4.5mm & 5.5mm in magic loop.

Mods: Simply shortened the total lenght to fit my recipient's head better (she is a very thin and delicate lady)

About the Pattern: The pattern is nicely written and very easy to follow. I learned a new technique: the Twisted German Cast-On, very nice for knits that need stretch. I might use it for socks as well. I don't really like knitting garter stitch in the round as the beginning of the round is pretty noticeable (any tricks?). I particularly love the tighter brim followed by the lovely drape of the hat's body. Sometimes, it can be just as simple.

About the Yarn: This yarn was a gift from Elise (thanks again!). The color is really beautiful (this is the kind of semi-solid shade I love), but the yarn seems very fragile. As it is single plied, I expect quite a lot of pilling if used for a sweater or gloves. If you use it for the first time, be warned that it might grow a lot after the first wash (wash your gauge!) and the thick and thin texture might upset you as the knitted fabric (especially in garter stitch) is not what we can call, even. Other than that, the yarn is wonderfully soft and has a beautiful silky sheen, I enjoyed knitting it quite a lot.

Modeled by my mum who (of course!) already requested the same pattern for her. It's the first time she actually likes a knitted hat!

  2. This is really lovely!
I don't have any suggestions for making the beginning of the round less noticeable. However, having knit this hat before, I do like that it looks more like a seam than the beggining of the round. I'm sure most won't be able to recognize that that's what it is.

    1. Thank you Andrea! I'm still a little upset by this "seam" thing, but I'm sure only a knitter can notice it.

  9. LOvely hat - very effective. I'm sure we knitters worry more about things like starting rounds than 'normal' people, and I think it is probably completely unnoticeable in wear, anyway.

    Garter stitch is gorgeous!

    1. Thank you for your comment. You're right, we worry about tiny things non-knitter don't even imagine :p

  10. It's gorgeous :D

I've also been knitting one so know what you mean about the 'seam', but I honestly don't think it matters. Mine is nearly done, just the last few rows to go!
